More about dehulled oats

Dehulled oats, also known as naked or peeled oats, are a high-quality cereal grain commonly used in equine nutrition. They are valued for their excellent digestibility, high energy content, and low dust levels. Unlike whole oats, where the husk remains on the kernel, dehulled oats have had the outer shell mechanically removed. This results in a cleaner product that is gentler on the horse’s digestive system and respiratory tract.

Our dehulled oats are sourced from white oats with a high hectolitre weight, which is an indicator of superior grain quality and nutritional value. A high hectolitre weight means the oats contain more starch and less hull, increasing the nutrient density per kilogram. After harvesting, the oats are carefully cleaned and then mechanically dehulled in a specialized process that removes the outer husk without damaging the grain, resulting in a pure, low-dust, and easily digestible final product.

Dehulled oats primarily provide readily available energy in the form of starch, making them especially suitable for sport and performance horses. Since most of the starch is digested in the small intestine, the risk of fermentation-related digestive issues in the hindgut—such as acidosis or colic—is reduced. Furthermore, the product contains minimal dust and husk residues, making it an excellent choice for horses with sensitive airways or dust allergies.

Thanks to their purity, energy density, and digestive efficiency, dehulled oats are an excellent base or complementary energy source in equine diets.
